Understanding of Genres

The artist is dressed in colourful shiny clothing, this links to the codes and conventions of a pop song music video as the song is created with intention of becoming popular, having an artist in appealing clothing, dressed nice, would make the music video popular as the audience knows that there has been an effort that has been put in.

The artist 'the weekend' looks happy throughout the music video, this is due to the fact that comedies are supposed to be enjoyable and happy and the audience needs to believe that the artist is enjoying what he is singing.

The artist in this specific music video has made face modifications which goes somewhat against the codes and conventions of a pop song. although this is the case, this extreme look the artist has chosen causes a lot of attention to the music video, artists do this kind of thing a lot, they do something extreme for views and for attention, and this would usually be initiated by the industry, with pure intentions of profit and power. This links to the Curran and Seaton theory about maximising profit and power in the industry

Meaning is created and shows the end of a relationship bringing moments of reflection, resentment and then, eventually bringing acceptance.

In this music video, we see the artist dressed in relaxed clothing, baggy jeans and a baggy blazer. The artist is dancing slowly and singing at a very mellow and low pace, this follows the codes and conventions of an R&B music video.

Meaning is created in this music video, for example, the music video is about a guy who likes a girl, the lyrics signal that there is tension between them and the way the artist is dancing signals some sexual tension which also fits into the codes and conventions of an R&B music video.

This links to the cultivation theory as many R&B songs and music videos are very similar, with very similar codes and conventions.

In this music video, the saturation and hue are turned up, with bright lighting, and increasing hue making the colours vivid and as colourful as possible. In this music video, the camera follows the artist and the artist is walking slowly forward as the camera slowly steps back, this shows the effect and shows the upbeat fast dancing that is about the occur, it is a buildup for the chorus.

The camera then follows the dancer as she dances to the music.

The meaning that is created is that the artist likes the excitement of a hidden relationship and the music video shows this throughout, with the lyrics backing this up.

This music video links to Andrew Goodwin's theory ' If a song is very electronic and upbeat the director may include a dance sequence to reflect the style. '

This music video is a heavily edited video, displaying different images with the same low saturation and low hue, the edits are fast and go in speed with the music which is decently fast-paced. The producer has mixed the edits with videos of the band performing.

This music video was released in 1971 so is significantly older than other music videos, although this is the case, the codes and conventions for this genre are very similar throughout and over time. The low saturation shows the 'rock and roll theme throughout this music video, the artists are also dressed in stereotypical rock and roll clothing, with crazy hair and over-the-top clothing.

The meaning created within this piece is to get rock and roll across to the public, as this music video is very old, rock and roll was not too popular at the time, and this led to Zeppelin's second release and is what made the band successful.

This can link to Henry Jenkins's fandom theory as there is a specific way rock and roll bands dress and present themselves, this lead to a fandom where fans would dress the same and would be easily identified as rock and roll fans.
